You are going to be creating a page on the wiki that is your space on this wiki and should represent you at your best. It will contain some profile information about you, your rules for online safety and links to all of the online work that you complete this year. Remember this is part of your Digital Footprint - think about what you are putting on your page and make sure that it's appropriate for school and reflects your best work.
Creating Your Page: Step #1
I would recommend reading through these directions as you complete the steps so make sure you right-click when you add the New Page so you can have these open at the same time as you are working on your page. You can watch the video and/or read the directions but you will need to do at least one or the other! Don't worry about photos, videos or links yet.
Check out my sample page to give you an idea of what you should be doing.
Sign In to the wiki.
Click on the New Page on the left-hand side of the page.
Page Name: Your ID - for example, if you are graduating in 2010 and your name is John Smith, your page name would be stm2010JS
Select Student Homepage under the Use A Template choices
Nothing should be in the Add Tags field
The first thing you will be doing is adding your self-portrait to the top of the page - you will REPLACE the first line of information on your page with your self-portrait and your first name (if you want to include your first name). To add your self-portrait, click on the picture icon in the edit toolbar (looks like a landscape picture) and upload your self-portrait. Once it is uploaded, double-click it to add it to the page. Use the minus sign in the Size Options of File Properties to resize your portrait. Here are some things you need to do before you upload your self-portrait:
Make sure you have a JPG version of your self-portrait. If you don't go in to PhotoFiltre and open your BMP version and resave it as a JPG (JPEG).
Make sure your file name is unique - it should contain your initials or your student ID. Your safest option is to name it your ID since that is unique. If you do not do this step and someone else has the same file name as you (for example, self-portrait) then you will both end up with the same portrait!
Fill in the information for all of the categories:
You can replace the category with your information or include your information after or under the category.
You can alter fonts, text sizes, colors, etc. using the T on the toolbar - you'll need to have the text you want to change selected when you click on the T
Your answers must be appropriate for school and must be written in complete sentences. Yes, spelling and grammar do count on this.
Remember, this is a public space and anyone with Internet access can see your pages which includes your parents, your teachers, the admissions office of the high schools you will be applying to, etc. Represent yourself well!
The last category on the page is for your online safety rules. Remember these are rules that you will follow to keep yourself safe. These are not rules for how you want others to treat you. Try using a numbered list for this. Check the Edit toolbar for that option. Check November 3rd on the 8th Grade page for more information on rules.
Before you move on to the next step make sure that:
The information is complete for all 10 of the "something" categories and for your safety rules.
The page just looks good - fonts, sizes, etc. should be consistent on your page. Don't have some of your information typed under the category heading and some included as part of what was the original category. You can do either one but be consistent!
All of the information is appropriate for school and is something you wouldn't mind your parents, your teachers, admissions offices, etc. to see.
You have used complete sentences and your spelling and grammar are correct.
You have included your self-portrait at the top of the page.
You have not included personal identifying information such as: Last Name, Address, Names of your Sports Teams, etc.
Creating Your Page: Step #2 - Images
Find and download images for 3-5 of the items on your profile. Here are some rules you have to follow for your images:
You can ONLY use creative commons photos or photos where permission to use them on class web sites has been granted by the photographer or artist.
You can only search for photos at the following sites and you MUST correctly cite your source for your images! Do not use Google! To download images, right click on them. Make sure your file names for your photos are unique - add your ID or at least your Initials to the image name. You might also want to add the site name (Pics4Learning or ClassroomClipart or Flickr) and/or the photographer's name to the file name to help you when you are trying to write your credits. You probably should have a Word document where you keep track of your image names and your source information because you will need it!
Pics4Learning
To cite your source, find the bibliography information and include that information between your REF tags.
Flickr Make sure you select Only Photos & Only search within Creative Commons-licensed content as shown. Be careful with your search terms and do not try to search for anything inappropriate - even though Safe Search is turned on you could run across something that is PG13 or above if you try - so DON'T TRY. If you find a photo you want to use click on the thumbnail to go to the Flickr page, then click on All Sizes and download the small or medium photo to your folder. To cite your source, put the URL of the Flickr page (the one where you clicked on All Sizes) between your REF tags.
If any of the images you downloaded were larger than 800 pixels tall or wide, please open them in PhotoFiltre and resize them to 600 pixels on the longest side and then resave them. It will take a long time to upload larger images and take a lot of disk space.
Once you have your photos, you can go back to your page and edit it to add your photos. There is a link to your page on the 8th Grade page or you can look under Recent Changes on the top left of the wiki and you'll probably find it there.
Use the Image icon on the Editor Toolbar to upload your images - make sure your image names are unique! If you use your ID it will be easier for you to search for your images in the future.
To create the credits for your images and this is REQUIRED:
Find the appropriate information for the image - you should have put this in a Word document in Step #1!
Under or beside or above the image, type in < ref>The credit for your image< /ref> You will need to remove the space after the open bracket when you are typing in your reference; there's a space here so you can actually see what you need to type.
Be consistent on where you put your < ref> information - either above or below or beside your image/
Before you go to the next step, make sure that:
You have included at least 3 (preferably 4 or 5) images that correlate with your profile text.
There is only one image on a category.
You have properly cited your sources for the images you used.
You only used Creative Commons photos.
Creating Your Page: Step #3 - Links, Videos & More!
If you talked about something on your page that has a web page of it's own, you probably should link to it. Did you say that you listen to a specific band? Do they have a web site? Add a link to it. Did you say that you want to be somewhere like Disneyland? Link to the Disneyland web site. To create your link, just highlight the words you want to link and click on the connected chain in the Editor Toolbar and create an External Link. You might want to open these in a new window so that people don't leave your page to visit these links.
Did you name a specific band in your Listen To information? Here's your chance to add a video to go with it. Yes, you may find and embed a video from YouTube BUT here are the rules you must follow:
Your page must be complete with all of your text content, your self-portrait and your 3-5 images!
You must ask me first and I need to know the name of the band or song you will search for and you can not search for or embed any band or song that is inappropriate. Yes, even if there is one swear word it is inappropriate.
You cannot search for other videos on YouTube
NOTE: If you break these rules you will lose all access to the Internet for the rest of the semester and will receive zeroes on the projects we do that require Internet access!
Do you want to see where the visitors to your page are from? Configure a Revolver Map and add it to your page! Use the TV Screen Icon and the Other HTML option to add the code you copy for your map.
